Bishop Expresses Domestic Violence Concern

9/30/2013

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Throughout our diocese and the rest of the state, disturbing reports on the rise of domestic violence are issues of great concern.

In 2011, the number of domestic violence reports by the New York City Police Department reached record highs, over 700 reports per day. Those numbers have not gone down in succeeding years. We know that the rise is not just a New York City phenomenon. Hope's Door in Pleasantville reports a dramatic increase in those requesting services.

Parish Summer BBQ Picnic

9/15/2013

The 2013 BBQ picnic on September 15 was a big success.  It was scheduled this year at the church, instead of at a park.  Just in time for the picnic event, new surfacing was added to the driveway.  And a combination grill with gas and charcoal in the same unit was purchased and used for the first time at the picnic.  In addition to classic BBQ food, such as potato salad, chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers, traditional West Indian and Caribbean specialties were also served.

Many volunteers were on hand to prepare the food, do the serving and cleaning-up.

The BBQ picnic was an opportunity to celebrate the 35th wedding anniversary of George and Isabella Thornhill.  They brought a dessert cake that had their photo specially printed on the icing.  Isabella also brought her iPad and took many pictures.

Courtney Henry supervised the grilling and served as DJ, playing contemporary and other Gospel music recordings that filled the air.

Please give your photos to the wardens.  Thank you.

Youth visit Hudson River Museum

9/8/2013

This summer some of the church youth accompanied Dolores Thompson, the church wardens, and others from Holy Cross for an enjoyable and surprising visit to the nearby Hudson River Museum.

Part of the visit included a Talent Show in the museum's outdoor amphitheater presented by youth from surrounding communities.  An art exhibit at the museum featured animals that were uniquely made, some from ammunition shell casings and some from old sneakers.
